- Created in 1948 as Wum Native Authority, covering the Kom, Fungom, Furu-Awah, Beba-Befang, and Esimbi areas.
- In 1964, renamed Wum Area Council with Kom area carved out to form the Kom-Bum Area Council.
- Became Wum Rural Council in 1974, and then divided into four councils in 1993.
- By Decree No. 2004/18 (July 22, 2004), it became Wum Council.
