WUM COUNCIL ILLUMINATES KEY AREAS, BOOSTS SECURITY WITH NEW SOLAR STREET LIGHTS

The Wum Council has successfully completed the installation of 12 all-in-one solar street lights along the critical stretch from GTHS Junction towards Ketcha in the Wum Municipality. This vital project, costing an estimated XAF 10 million, is a significant stride towards enhancing public safety and curbing insecurity within the area.

The newly installed solar-powered lights are expected to transform night-time conditions, which have often been associated with increased vulnerability for residents. Historically, the lack of proper illumination in these zones contributed to a sense of unease and provided cover for illicit activities.

Speaking on the initiative, Eboa Akelendi Ku-Isoh, the Council Development Officer of the Wum Council, emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “This installation is not just about lighting up streets; it’s about brightening the lives of our citizens and restoring a sense of security,” the representative stated. “We understand that adequate lighting is a fundamental deterrent to crime, and these solar street lights will significantly reduce opportunities for wrongdoing after dark.”

The all-in-one solar street lights are designed for efficiency and sustainability. Each unit is self-contained, integrating a solar panel, battery, and LED lamp into a single fixture, making them environmentally friendly and reducing reliance on the national grid. This self-sufficiency also ensures consistent lighting even during power outages, a common challenge in some regions.

Local residents have already expressed their relief and gratitude for the project. “Before, walking from GTHS Junction to Ketcha after 7 PM was always a risk,” said a resident of Ketcha. “Now, with these bright lights, I feel much safer walking home from work or errands. It’s a huge relief.”

The XAF 10 million investment underscores the Wum Council’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being and security of its constituents. Beyond curbing insecurity, the improved visibility is also expected to facilitate safer night-time movement for pedestrians and motorists, and potentially boost local night-time economic activities.

This initiative marks a significant step in the council’s ongoing efforts to develop robust infrastructure that directly addresses community needs and improves the overall quality of life for the people of Wum Municipality.
